One of the fastest ways to escalate any training for your dog is by praising him. If you know to praise and be affectionate right away when he performs or does a good work, then you will have totally won his heart. He will keep doing that which pleases you over and over again as dogs are ferociously loyal. You will also not want to be extra sensitive in showing affection while on training as this will only distract his focus. A firm and positive feedback to linger enough is adequate. You will know that he is pleased but do not get him excited so that he is not focused on the task at hand.
From puppy hood you should praise him enough. Praise every time when he does the right thing and reprimand less. Keep the praise high when he sits still through the veterinary chamber, or takes the medicine, gets out of crate in time, fetches the ball and so on. But let the action be finished to let the praise come in. If you see an action on the way of being performed and yet distract him with praise bang in the middle he will start romping around or playing without finishing the work ever.
So keep the praise on the high end but right after he has done it. This way his brain understands what he has been praised for.
Similarly when he does something naughty or unfair reprimand him about face right then. If you are away and find your torn shoe (done by him, most probably out of boredom) then bring the shoe in front of him and use your voice to show that you are displeased. If you do not bring the evidence of the deed right in front there is no point scolding him for he will be severely traumatized without understanding what is it you are scolding him for. This must be borne in mind at all costs that once the deed is done it is very much forgotten by the dog brain unless you bring living proof and evidence of it. The right time for correction is catching him in the middle of the action. This is the right way for correcting any of his behavioral problems.
When a dog does something good give him time to romp around for a while with his favorite chewing toy or something fun. This lets him bask in the light of his praise and reward. This is a far fetching and ideal reward than food reward every time. You will notice some favorite rolling on his back or ideal ways of expressing pleasure every time something nice happens. This can be being praised for doing something nice, when you are back home after a long time, getting his favorite meal or just a grass bed to play. All these are signs to show us that he is pleased. Look for these ideal times for him most and you will note what he enjoys most. To be praised after training and getting a reward is nothing like it.
